Anna Stephenson Art Therapy
HCPC & BAAT Registered Art Psychotherapist
I have seen first hand how accessible, engaging, and personal experiences of creativity in a safe, boundaried therapeutic space can support children and young people. Offering Art Therapy in primary and secondary schools (group and 1-1), I have supported children and young people with a wide range of needs including: developmental trauma, neurodiversity, difficulty regulating behaviour, attachment difficulties, grief, loss, self-harm, gender and sexual identity issues, anxiety, challenges accessing and engaging in school, family based difficulties or changes.
With over 20 years of experience working with children and families in varied roles, I bring a warm, creative, and holistic approach to emotional and developmental support. My professional journey began in primary school teaching and expanded into community and voluntary work, educational art workshops, art and children's illustration and then Art Psychotherapy. My experience and qualifications are rooted in a deep understanding of developmentally appropriate communication and positive relationships and the importance of play and imaginative creativity.
Qualifications: MA Art Psychotherapy, PGCE Post Graduate Certificate in Education, BSc Human Communication & its Disorders.
I continue to develop my knowledge and skills through relevant training (Suicide Awareness Training, Self-harm, Safeguarding (Adults & Children) Level 3, Dyadic Child-Parent Art Therapy Level 1, Demand Avoidance, Emotional Regulation Skills, Trauma Informed Approaches, Mindful Breathing, Psychoeducation in Art Therapy, Somatic Training).
My approach to Art Therapy is grounded in a relational and attachment-based framework. Building a trusting, safe, and compassionate therapeutic relationship is at the heart of my work. I bring sensitivity and warmth to the therapy space, recognising the importance of feeling genuinely seen, heard, and accepted. Art therapy offers a space to explore, create, and simply be together in ways that words alone may not allow.
Sessions are led by your needs, pace and choices. It's not about being good at art — it's about using creative materials as a tool for expression and connection. Through sensory-based activities, you can explore and engage in ways that build trust and support the regulation of body sensations.
Reflective conversations can accompany art-making, play, and creativity. These moments of reflection can help deepen understanding, support emotional growth, and create space for meaningful connection.

Finding the right kind of support for a child or young person can feel challenging and overwhelming. Often, parents and carers look for therapeutic support for their child after seeing them stuggle with emotional, behavioural, or social difficulties, and it can be hard to know where to begin. I will listen to your concerns and challenges you may be facing without judgement and whatever you share with me will be received with sensitivity.
We can arrange an face-to-face initial meeting in which we can discuss how the sessions work, you can visit the therapy room and we can explore what brings you and your child to therapy in more detail. Then we can decide the best way forward. Some people require brief support, while others may benefit from attending sessions over a longer-term basis.
Before sessions start, I will seek informed consent from both parent/carer and child to make sure that everyone understands and agrees to attending therapy in a way that feels safe and respectful.
Please note: The Art Therapy sessions are confidential and one-to-one with your child, so that I can provide a safe therapeutic environment. There isn't a waiting room for parents, although there are two cafes next door and a variety of shops close by.
We can arrange review meetings as the sessions proceed, to discuss changes, consider whether adjustments might be needed to support your child and we can think and decide together when it is the right time to end the sessions.
